Trekitt X Mammut: Climbing Commando Ridge
Recently Ben and Kasia were fortunate enough to head down to Cornwall to Climb the stunning Bosigran Ridge (VD).
Bosigran is sometimes referred to as an alpine ridge in miniature. An imposing granite spine pushing straight out of the Atlantic, Bosigran offers great climbing and even better views, a perfect introduction to sea cliff climbing. Acting as a training ground for commandos during WW2, it secured the rather fitting nickname, Commando Ridge.

Is your pack heavy enough for your next adventure? Lightweight vs Rightweight

Something that we're all guilty of in the outdoor world is trying to save weight when packing for our next adventure and keeping things as light as possible. After all, light is right, right? We Wore One Baselayer for 7 Days Straight
Great video Paul. I will say that loose blown synthetic insulation such as Thermoplume is great up until the point of washing. It is impossible to wash and dry without clumping even if following recommended procedures.
What i take from this new upgrade is same bag with different side pockets a 1 extra piece of velcro on lombar adjustments. Completely worth 500 euros xD
It is pronounced Boss Ig Ran an. Not bossygran.
Nice review! Is it good as an emergency jacket to keep in your backpack in case of unexpected events? What is the minimum temperature that allows you to stay warm in static conditions?
The Cirrus Alpine would work as that emergency warm layer in your pack and has the advantage of being synthetic, so will keep you warm even if it gets wet. Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer on a minimum temperature as that will vary based on the individual in question, the overall conditions and their other clothing. A relatively safe bet would be in the low single figures assuming you are wearing a good set of base layers and a fleece or synthetic midlayer. You could further improve its performance by popping a waterproof shell over the top to make it fully wind and waterproof, consequently retaining more heat.
Nice one Ben. I am not a climber (don't do exposed heights like tat!) but get my thrills from watching others..lol
Thank you, it was a rather enjoyable day out for all involved. The exposure with climbing certainly isn't for everybody, good job there's still plenty to see and get to by walking in. Bosigran is a beautiful place to visit regardless of whether you choose to climb or not, highly recommended visiting for the views!
Not at that price no chance
Yes walking poles work, but this video, like many others, shows how not to walk with them. He isn't using them correctly. You use them as you normally walk without poles. The left foot goes forward, with the right pole. When you walk naturally, the opposite arm goes with the opposite leg . This is how poles are suppose to be used.
Thank you!
Hi! How does the color fog hold up? I know the black shows the wax scratches and lint, and the ochre is always getting dirty. Iv read in Reddit that the fog is good but haven’t been able to find any review proof of that over time. What do you think?
We can only provide anecdotal feedback for Fog, it does seem to hold up better compared to the other lighter colours, but most of the Kanken range will age and patina through use due to the nature of the fabric. If you want to keep a Kanken looking pristine it will require some maintenance.
Based on this review I bought the Fjallraven Vardag but I directly send them back! They were not strechy at all, more a stiff trouser like a tight jeans. Moving around felt I was in a harness. So not my choice this trousers
Memory foam in boots is an awful idea in my opinion
We've found memory foam to be a great comfort addition to certain boots, but we can appreciate it is not for everyone, hopefully we have enough options with and without memory foam to keep everyone happy with their boot options. Out of curiosity, what is it about memory foam in boots you're not a fan of?
Fantastic video. Thanks.
How would you compare ventilation for winter sports of a G1000 parka vs. the Singi X parka, which is all cotton?
The Singi X would take the win in a breathability contest thanks to it's improved ventilation and lighter-weight fabric choice, but something in G-1000 wouldn't be too far behind. It would depend more on how many layers of Greenland Wax have been used on the G-1000 piece to improve it's weather resistance, more wax = less breathability. We would say if your ambitions lead to faster-paced activities then go with the Singi X, but for slower paced activities where more protection and durability might be needed then something in G-1000 could be a winner.
@@trekitt Thanks!
thank you
It is still used by Commando's to this day, I was dragged up it sometime in the '70s
Excellent demonstration
Thank you!
What color is this exactly? On website looks more green?
The colour featured in the video are the Laurel colourway linked in the video description, they do come out greener in person compared to how they came across on this video. If you're after something a little more muted, then the Dark Olive version might suit you a little better: www.trekitt.co.uk/clothing/trousers-shorts/fjallraven-mens-keb-agile-trousers-dark-olive__55330
Really interesting, especially the weigh in. Could you do a link/typing out of the products in the description so we can search for them
Links have been added to the video description!
@@trekitt nice one thank you!
Great talk through on weight and choice Ben and when you weighed stuff at the end I was flabbergasted at the weight.. I would consider the 7kg pack to be UL.... then I realised you had not included food, water and clothing which adds considerable weight to any trip - so maybe an overall kit weight might have given a more realistic amount you would expect to carry. My lightweight rucsack is the Osprey Exos 48 whilst the bulkier carry is the Kestrel 48. I ditched my bigger litre bags sometime ago as I found the bigger the bag the more you will try to pack in to it - and the heavier it becomes. regards Alan
Doing a full pack out with everything was something we considered doing for this video (and maybe watch this space...). We decided against it with a focus just on some of the core pieces of equipment that will have the biggest effect on the overall pack weight (apart from water). Ben's pack would've had an extra few kilos just in snacks if we'd let him. Two good packs there that cover all the bases. Limiting yourself to 48L is also a great shout, any more and we'd also be tempted to fill it, it can soon get away from you!
What is the difference between 2 vs 2+ ?
The only major difference is the battery is bigger on the Campstove 2+ 3200 mAh vs. 2600 mAh on the Campstove 2
If the interior of the boot is leather, do you apply leather treatment after cleaning the interior? The wetting and drying due to the cleaning is ok?
You can apply a small amount of leather treatment to the inners, but the inners take care of themselves a little easier in a leather lined boot, can be a bit gross to think about, but our sweat and skin oils will usually be enough to keep the leather in good condition on the inside without the addition of leather treatment. Think about a leather wallet or belt, very rare that you'd have to treat them, they're in constant contact with us and that's what keeps them in good condition. Wetting and drying due to cleaning is absolutely fine and won't damage the leather.
Would you recommend a footprint for this tent?
A footprint is something we would recommend for pretty much every tent. Whilst the bathtub on the Abisko Lite 1 will stand up to plenty of punishment, the extra peace of mind from adding a footprint is worth the small weight penalty in our minds. Plus it keeps your tent in better condition, much easier to wash a footprint than the entire tent.
I noticed the size discrepancies between Fjällräven's own website and their ow video they've recently published. Unfortunately, your information also doesn't help in any way. To give an idea: their information contradicts itself concerning minimum back length. They say that S/M is only available until the 75 and above that only size M/L is available. However, on their own website they state a minimum back length for the 100 (so that's size M/L) of 42 centimetres. However, the 75 in S/M has a minimum back length of 44 centimetres. Which is taller. Which tells me that size M/L is SMALLER than size S/M. Which is quite confusing. Since usually S stands for SMALL, M stands for MEDIUM and L stands for LARGE. Apparently the Swedish language differs in quite the opposite direction of the English language. Perhaps it would be wise to put an explicit statement on your website of this opposing sizing? That way customers wil not get lured in buying the wrong size. I'm a smaller guy for example and it seems that size M/L would be best for me...!
looks like they replaced the vega with the gasherbrum? thats what the picture looks similar to
The Vega is still in the Mountain Equipment range, it hasn't been replaced by the Gasherbrum. The Gasherbrum has more down insulation, as well as dropping from a 30D outer fabric to a 10D, with the addition of Gore-Tex Infinium, so it is a bit of a different beast. You can see the updated Vega Jacket here: trekitt.co.uk/dpt/pgr/mountain-equipment-mens-vega-jacket-cosmos__51814
Best boots I’ve ever worn, and I’ve worn a few, mind. I’ve just never forked out this much before… All the best.👍🏾😉🇬🇧
Excellent boots most comfortable ever
Heavy and too expensive to have wood frame elements. Imagine sitting to the backpack to have a rest and breaking the wood. Will survive, but... come on...
I think we sit down with our packs differently, you'd be doing well to break the wood frame on this unless you're very aggressive with it. Fortunately the wood stays are user replaceable should you manage to break them. We also don't tend to recommend sitting directly on your pack, they're not designed for it. Leaning against it sure, sitting on it not so much.
@@trekitt this pack - sure, not designed. "FSC certified" though does not tell much as they certify practices sometimes far from nature friedly, I heard. I have had a lot of backpacks in my life, from cheap local brands to quite advanced and expensive models from Lowe Alpine, Jack Wolfskin and Tatonka but it's first time I hear they are not designed to sit on. On long journeys when you carry all with you, the backpack is the only thing you have to sit down. All my backpacks are still alive and functioning. You can't break an aluminum frame, only bend it.
This may be your experience, but we often carry a foam seatpad or lightweight camping chair when out for extended periods, products designed specifically for the task of sitting. If you haven't experienced any issues using your pack to sit on, then, by all means, continue to do so, it's just not our preferred method of sitting down outdoors. Maybe something like this will keep us both happy: www.trekitt.co.uk/rucksacks/outdoor-rucksacks/fjallraven-singi-stubben-stone-grey__40063
@@trekitt sure it is my experience and isn't it a place to share some? I do carry a sitting pad, too. Sometimes you cut it even smaller to save a few gramms (l don't ;). So no chairs. And sitting pads work poorly in snow. Hey, it's not about who is right or wrong, happy or not. I did not want to make any impressions like that on you. Don't get me wrong: FR make high quality stuff and all who can afford it, should go for it. Just make sure you pay attention to other people's concerns (experience) and make your own conclusions. All the best, folks!
Far to heavy pack to be considered
It is heavier than the competition, but for something this adjustable, feature rich and durable, it can be a pay-off worth considering. Similarly featured packs from Osprey like the Atmos AG 65 come in around 2.3kg and by being smart with your other gear choices you can make up the c.700g difference. Obviously there are lighter alternatives out there and they may be better suited to you, but we have a saying at Trekitt: Light is right, but not always.
@@trekitt I appreciate your reaction. However, nowadays, for most backpackers who are not bushcraft survivalists spending weeks without any support, this backpack is way too heavy in my opinion, and I'm not alone. I see many ordinary hikers fail because of a far too heavy kit, starting with a too big and heavy backpack. The rule to be considered is 1, 1, and 1 kg: backpack, sleeping system, and tent. Of course, for the strong endurance hiker out in the bush for weeks, this backpack is fantastic.
Of course you're not alone, there's a thriving market for lightweight equipment, but there are equally as many people who may appreciate a pack more like the Kajka. Sometimes the lightest thing isn't the best for everyone or they simply want something that feels reassuringly sturdy, personal preferences play a big part in people's enjoyment of the outdoors. Exactly why we stock things like the Kajka and lightweight kit to hopefully cater to everyone and their preferences for their outdoor kit.
@@edmegens6317 Good luck with a 1 kg tent in Scottish winds of 80 km/h and accompanying rain of 40-60 mm. I can already disclose that a Durston won't cut it, and probably hardly anything will.
To "ikreisrond" : You possibly are right, although people hike the Cape Wrath Trail with various tents. Hopefully, I do not have that weather. Are your speaking out of experience? Would be interesting to share.
raincover.... ? gimme a break.... in which century was that thing developed?
A rain cover offers reliable weather protection and in this case also acts as a safety marker when out trekking in adverse conditions. The great thing about a rain cover is that it is entirely removeable so if you don't want to use it or think they're outdated you can simply remove it from your pack and go about your day.
Such a shame they still don't have a removable / replaceable waist belt. Mine was damaged and I was not able to have it repaired. I had to get a complete new backpack while the backpack itself was still in perfect condition.
The hip belt on this version of the Kajka is strippable, minus the central lumbar support. As to whether Fjallraven offer replacements themselves at this stage I'm afraid we don't know for definite, but it would really surprise us if they didn't have some spares available. Sorry to hear about your negative experience with your previous pack.
cannot believe we are still reinventing the wheel.....
You lost me when you said 3kgs!!
It is heavier than the competition, but for something this adjustable, feature rich and durable, it can be worth the pay-off. Considering the older version came in at 3.6kg we'd say the newer model has seen a substantial makeover, and the old pack proved rather popular. Obviously there are lighter alternatives out there and they may be better suited to you, but we have a saying at Trekitt: Light is right, but not always.
'Back in the days' the Bergans' (Powerframe 130) empty weight was 4 kgs. I see it nowadays has an empty weight of 5,420 kilograms. However, when loaded with 30(+) kgs of gear and food (around 8 - 10 kgs of gear and 3 weeks of food for the Canadian wilderness) it carried way better than the competition. The only thing was that the plastic back plate would break after prolonged use with high loads. 3 kgs empty without a breaking back system and still carrying (way) better than the competition, is a huge plus. Even (former) special forces prefer either a Fjällräven Kajka or a Deuter Aircontact X. The 85 and the 80+15 liters of these weigh 3390 or 3370 grams. I think that is neglible.
Typical Blorenge weather, hear any grouse? Nice looking pack but at 3kgs I would be looking for something a bit lighter. atb Alan
It was most certainly a very typical Blorenge weather day, we did manage to see the sun briefly, but it didn't stick around for too long! No grouse this time around, although it was very windy so might not have heard them even if they were about.
I really like the new design. The side pouches have gotten a much needed upgrade.
We agree, they're a solid upgrade over the last generation Kajka.
Can barely find any uset reviews on la sportiva TX hike gtx..
Bought the 1 person version of this tent from you recently. Excellent service from Debbie, would definitely buy from you again. Simon
Thank you for the feedback. We hope you enjoy your new tent!
I really like this bag . Did you find it a tight fit it looks pretty restrictive. Across the shoulders . Cant tell if i need the extra zips of the pro or the weight saving of the standard spark . Id probably get the 1 degree for summer /spring use
We really like it too. Ben did find it snug, but not overly restrictive across the shoulders. He has said he would be happy to sleep in it without any concerns of it being too tight. Unless you're after the absolute smallest and lightest, the Pro is much more adaptable and still comes in at an impressively small and light pack size, that's what our money would be on.
That's exactly what I was thinking but at another £100 on top for basically extra zips and flexibility makes an expensive bag even more so .
@@rufusduck71 the spark family are definitely a premium line of sleeping bags, but their build quality and use of premium materials makes them very nice bags. Whether or not the extra zips and flexibility are worth it for you is a decision only you can make, but if it helps, Ben prefers the Pro for that extra flexibility (and for jumping around in the woods, but that's another story...).
Thank you for this info. I have very bad arthritis in both my feet. I’ve been wondering if walking poles would help with support and stability as I walk. One cane is no use to me since both my feet are arthritic so walking poles seem like they might be a solution. Can you comment on this, please?
A pair of poles will help with support and stability when walking. Whether they will be enough to make a difference to your walking enjoyment or not will be subjective, but we would recommend giving them a try.
Do you know if the Kanken organizer accessory fits this bag?
If we're being honest, we don't know for sure. We don't currently stock the Organizer, however, we'd have a good guess at saying that it would fit as it fits the standard Kanken, and both the Kanken Laptop variants which have similar internal space to the Outlong. If you decide to take the plunge and order one we'd be curious to hear if it fits. And if it doesn't fit, we didn't tell you it did 🤐😂
@@trekitt thanks for the quick reply! I’ll let you know!
Hi, was this windproof and do you think it’s enough for weather with 5-7 degrees? Thank you.
When fully waxed it is windproof, wash that wax out and you have a much more breathable piece. With the right layering underneath 5-7 degrees won't be an issue in the Vardag Anorak.
Thanks for the detailed breakdown. Mines arrived this morning. 🎯
1,7l msr reactor stove!!!
how many times i should pass the wax bar over the zone that i want waterproof? a minimum reference
The wax will not make G-1000 waterproof, but will increase it's water resistance. For better overall weather resistance 3 layers of wax is a good start, heating in between each wax application to melt it into the fabric. You can add more wax, but this will also leave the fabric stiffer, less breathable and with a waxier surface finish. Good thing is though that you can wash the wax out if you don't like how it feels. We would recommend starting with 3, try it out in wet weather to see how it performs and if those 3 layers don't offer enough protection you can top up with another one.
I've had a couple of pairs of these and really like them. Now, as to the "not suitable for steep ascents and rocky terrain" statement, I used these to go up Kilimanjaro. I will admit that you feel more rocks under your feet than in many other shoes, and you need to be used to that feeling. There was one day where I questioned my decision, but ultimately they were very comfy through the whole 8 day trip. I was super happy with them and my comfort/dryness level.
Really great video. Thank you
ETC stands for “Extended Tent Canopy” 😊
It's 3 years later - are they still waterproof? I've found plenty of waterproof trousers are great when new but after a couple of years you get wet thighs. I don't mind spending money of decent gear but the obsession with lightweight does tend to lead to expensive kit that doesn't last very long, which just seems wasteful.
There's still a number of pairs going strong with some of our customers. As ever there is a compromise between weight and durability. A big part in keeping kit going longer is also the proper care and maintenance of the kit.
How noisy is this fabric? Rustle free?
Whilst not totally silent, the fabric is a lot quieter than most outer fabrics, especially when the wax has softened through use a little.
I tried them three days ago for the first time. I will never hike again without them. They are great.
We're very big fans of poles here at Trekitt. Glad you found them helpful.
Great video ! Which size of mattress (for 2 people) could you fit inside? You spoke about a exped megamat if I understood well ?
Pretty much anything will fit inside the Asgard as it is so spacious, but yes, the mat we refer to here is the Exped MegaMat 10 Duo: trekitt.co.uk/sleep-shelter/sleeping-mats/exped-megamat-10-duo-ruby-red-sleeping-mat__33202
